About the Practice
Detail:

There are several ways to preserve grain for long. To store edible grain for one year and more, Gandabhai Patel has a simple method. He mixes 250 gram seed of red chili (Capsicum annuum) with the grain proposed to be stored. But it will be better if the grain is stored in a cylindrical structure such as drum or vessel. Such a structure and the chili seed have a greater scope to preserve the grain from insects and so on. It goes without saying that after ensuring the two requirements the mouth of the cylindrical structure needs to be closed airtight preferably with a hard cap. This method will keep insects away. Why farmers need to preserve grain for long is the greater question. They need to store the grain to ward off the danger of distress sale and the merciless market forces. It is these forces that play on the farmers helplessness to hold his produce for long. Besides, most of the indebted farmers need to reach their produce to the market as fast as possible for sole survival. Even so, if the farmer has means to store his grain or produce for better market conditions to prevail, he will have greater options.
