Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) crop, which is to be irrigated at that site, 5 feet long, 3 feet broad and 3 feet deep pit is made and it is filled with the water and onion (Allium cepa). Before the onset of monsoon season, three days prior the initiation of striga (Striga asiatica) weed, 100 kg castor cake (Ricinus communis) is placed in that pit and allowed to ferment. This quantity is sufficient for 1 ha of land. The water is passed from this pit as and when irrigation is required. One person will continuously stir the pit mixture with the help of stick made up of mesquite (Prosopis juliflora). When the water is passed from this pit, the problem of stiga is reduced. Two irrigations are given at the interval of eight days to reduce the problem of striga in the field. This method is beneficial particularly in Bardoli area of Surat district, where the large production of sugarcane crop is obtained. There, 10 feet long, 10 feet broad and 7 foot deep size of pit is prepared, in which 1000 kg onion is filled with 400 kg of castor cake. The same way water is allowed to pass from this pit for the control of stiga weed."
