About the Practice
Detail:

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is cultivated in semi-arid areas of Gujarat. However, one of the major limiting factors in its productivity is bacterial blight disease. Disease is favoured by humid and cloudy weather, especially off season raining at flowering stage of the crop. To control this disease, proper care is required at the very critical stage. About one kilogram of sugar is mixed with 5 kg of salt and grinded to powder. The powder thus obtained is dusted on the cumin crop on the cloudy day. This prevents the crop from disease. The so prepared medicine is sufficient for 0.16 ha. of standing crop of cumin. According to Dr. K.D. Solanki and Prof. T.N. Barevadia, cloudy atmosphere is favoured by wilt and blight and is many times mis-interpreted as wilt. According to Dr. Solanki and Dr. Surendra Dave, salt and sugar are hygroscopic in nature. The concentraion of salt and sugar increases on the leaf that leads to the reduction of pH and exo-osmosis takes place, which absorb the water, from the leaf. The concentration of sugar and salt on the leaf surface, does not allow the fungal growth.
