Cultivation of cotton and tuvar is done on a large scale in the Valia taluka of Bharuch district. About seven to eight years ago immense epidemic of various pests like green larvae, lashkari larvae, parasites etc was seen in cotton. The farmers used chemicals indiscriminately, still insects were not controlled. How would they get controlled? They grew in the atmosphere of these chemicals so it was like tonic to them. In this situation Ahmedbhai Kadiwala, Gamalsinh Rana, and other farmers of Deshad village thought of trying out household remedies. In his area the naffatia [Ipomoea aquatica] plant grows abundantly in the trenches that run on both the sides of the road and also in the fencing. They thought that this herb is not eaten by goats, camels or any such animal therefore definitely there should be some poisonous elementin it.In order to get rid of the worms Ahmedbhai put 500 gm of leaves of naffatia in to two and a half litres of water and boiled it until it was reduced to half its quantity and then sprayed it on the crops through a pump approximately 15 l by mixing 400-500 ml of solution to the water. As informed by the farmers, the use of solution of naffatia plant effectively controlled the white flies and other parasites and also the wormsin the cotton crop. The farmers used the cotton solution for the worms eating up the flowers and pods of tuvar crop and the result was good."
