The humidity in the air following the first rains during the monsoon season makes the environment ideal for the breeding of various insects. Several species of insects like the fruit fly, sucking insects, and Castor semilooper insects abound and attack fruit crops. These insects damage the jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), mango (Mangifera indica), guava (Psidium guajava) as well as other vegetable crops. To control extensive damage to the crop, Shah makes use of powders of tamaku or tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and vavding, a poisonous false-black pepper (Embelia ribes), cowdung and cow urine in a preparation. Vavding is available in most grocery shops. Take tobacco powder 3 kg, vavding powder 250 g and cowdung 5 to 6 kg. Mix these well and dissolve in 5 L of cow urine. Dilute the mixture in 20 to 25 l of water. Stir well and allow to stand for two days. Filter the liquor through a cloth and again dilute in 200 L of water. Spraying the solution once over the crop at the start of monsoon controls loss from dropping away of the tender fruit pods due to disease as well as in insect attack. Shah advocates caution in handling vavding powder as it is quite poisonous.

cow urine acts as a nutrient as well as hormone and believed to served as repellent for insects. Different concentrations of Cow urine either alone or in combination with recommended insecticides provided effective control of many insect pests. D.M. KORAT and K.R. DENGALE. 2011.
