About the Practice
Detail:

In the crop of bottlegourd new sprout stops developing and this affects the yield if there is continuous rain, poor soil type and similar other factors. Under such circumstances, farmers try out large number of practices to tackle the problem. Shri Dineshbhai Jivabhai of Hatrod village of Sabarkantha District uses buttermilk and castor oil (Ricinus communis) to improve the productivity of bottlegourd. According to the information provided by the farmer use 10 L two days old buttermilk and 5 L of castor oil and mix it thoroughly. Use this mixture 100 gm per plant. Farmer has carried out this experiment in 1994. According to the experience of the farmer by following this practice, new sprouts begin to come. The crop looks dark green and the fruit of bottlegourd good. The treated crop yields 50 quintals per bigha. Further Dineshbhai says that this practice needsto be carried out only once in the lifetime of the crop. (According to the information provided by Cr.Surendra Dave, Dr. Kalyansundaram and Prof. T. N. Barevadiyana there are some nutrients present in the sour buttermilk and castor oil and so application of this to the roots of the plant may increase the yield of the crop.
