It is very important to select the good seeds to have higher production. Where farmers are using desi seeds there are many practices prevalent to selection of good quality seeds. For seed using bulb as the seed does production the cultivation of onion. In the North Gujarat the crop of onion grown for the seed production is known as Bhungada. Shri Gemabhai Chavada of Paniwada village of Bhavnagar District uses an interesting technique for the selection of he bulbs for seed production of onion. As per as the information provided by the farmer he selects and uproots along with the bulb those plant of onion from the field that have not beared flowers. From this the plants, which have reddish colourand are big are separated. These bulbs are tied nearby each other on the thread, are hanged in the shade and are conserved in this fashion. By doing this the bulb receives air and do not get spoiled. In the winter of the second year this bulb are brought down, are separated and are used for sowing. By following this practice the yield of the second crop is higher and even the quality is also good. This practice has been developed traditionally. The farmers of this region have been using this practice.
