If smut disease occurs in the sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) crop, Vallabhbhai Patel suggests planting of seeds of Bishop weeds (Trachyspermum ammi) along with the seeds of broom corn. This prevents smut disease in the crop of sorghum. He learnt of this technique from his elders.
Crop: Sorghum
Crop Scientific Name: (Sorghum vulgare)
Crop Vernacular Name: Fodder sorghum, jowar, jola, juar, or cholam
Formulation: Seeds of Bishop weeds (Trachyspermum ammi) along with the seeds of broom corn
Ingredients: Carom (Trachyspermum ammi)
Control of Fusarial wilt diseases of pigeonpea by (Trachyspermum ammi) In vitro screening of some essential oils against Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht and F. udum Butler which cause wilt diseases of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) (Mill spp.) revealed that the oil of Trachyspermum ammi (ajowain) was a strong fungitoxicant. The toxicity of the oil was found to be fungicidal at 0.1%, which inhibited heavy doses of inocula (25 fungal discs, each of 5-mm diameter) and killed the test pathogen in just 2-3 s."
