Rats eat away the cotton capsules [pods], the stalks, roots, etc. of the crop and create a lot of damage. Nanji Bhagwanbhai Chauhan of Sosia village, Bhavnagar has adopted a very interesting method to control this epidemic. They put pods of kuvech (Mucuna pruriens) in the rat holes so that when the rats come out they come into contact with it. The minute fibres on the pods create a lot of itching if they fall on some part of the body or if they are touched, so the rat starts running around and rolls on the ground. The farmers believe that when this happens one or two times, the rat decreases his movement to an from that hole and goes far away from there.
