About the Practice
Detail:

Vegetable crops like chilli (Capsicum annuum) and brinjal (Solanummelongena) require more moisture and well managed cultivation. Weeds can be a major constraint in the production of these crops. Green mulch can effectively control the weed infestation. To control weeds in crops like chilli and brinjal, leaves and branches of tellicherry bark plant (Holarrhena anti-dysenterica) are spread in the furrows around the crop plant. This prevents direct loss of moisture from the soil, as evaporation losses due to sunrays is avoided. Conservation of moisture and weed control ultimately results in higher yield of these crops. Dried leaves and branches decompose with the passage of time and act as fertilizer to the crop. Tellicherry bark plant is bitter in taste that prevents insect pest infestation.Mulching is done after 15 days of transplanting of the seedlings of these crops, when the transplanted plants are well established in the field and first inter-culturing with first irrigation is over. Water supply can be made on need basis.

PAS 1:

"Based on the experimental results, it could be concluded that plastic mulches had tremendous effects on the growth, and yield of chilli, and black plastic showed superior performance among the plastic mulches. Black plastic mulch was suppressed the weed growth and thereby, increased the fruits yield. Therefore, the cultivation of chilli using black plastic mulch could bring an ample scope for producing more spices" [Ashrafuzzaman, Md& Halim, M. & Ismail, Mohd&Shahidullah, S. & Hossain, Alamgir. (2011). Effect of Plastic Mulch on Growth and Yield of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.). Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology. 54. 321-330. 10.1590/S1516-89132011000200014.]

PAS 2:

"Neem leaves mulch can be used to increase morphological traits like plant height, leaf area, stem girth and number of branches, fresh weight and dry matter leading to improved growth and yield of amaranths. Seaweed mulches can also be used to increase leaf number, chlorophyll, leaf area, stem girth and number of branches which contribute to the growth of amaranths. A clear indication that effects of mulches depends on the mulching material. Organic mulches such as neem leaves, seaweeds and wood shavings can be used to enhance growth and yield of amaranthus in the region. Similar work should be done to determine the effect of these organic mulches on cereals such as maize and sorghum; and legumes such as cowpeas and green grams in the region. There is need to study other organic mulches to increase the variety of organic mulches so that farmers can have variety of mulches to use depending on circumstances." [Biriah, Ndiso&Muindi, Esther. (2019). EFFECT OF SELECTED ORGANIC MULCHES ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF AMARANTHUS IN KILIFI COUNTY.
