About the Practice
Detail:

A mixture of cow dung and water to prevent the attack of Nilgai on the chiku(Achrus zapota) plant. Amrutbhai Patel from the Mehsana district in Gujarat protects the chiku(Achrus zapota) plants from the attack of Nilgai with the help of a mixture made from cow dung and water. Small plants of chiku (Achrus zapota) are often damaged by Nilgai. They eat away the tender twigs and leaves of the chiku plant. The Nilgai particularly damages the plants that emit milky substance.About 240 chiku plants of Gram Bharati, out of which six or seven plants were damaged in the last two years by Nilgai. To prevent this damage, Patel sprinkles a mixture of cow dung and water on the top branches of the chiku plants with the help of a broom. It is observed that although Nilgais enter the orchard, they do not eat the tender twigs and leaves of the plant because of the foul odour. Sprinkle the mixture regularly on the plants every 15 to 20 days. Gram Bharati has followed this practice for the last one and a half years. The cow dung should not be very dense and it should be sprinkled only on the top portion of the twigs of the plant. Heavy sprinkling all over the parts may affect the process of photosynthesis which will have an adverse effect on the plant‟s growth.
