About the Practice
Detail:

In Surendranagar district of Gujarat, the aphid is known as molo According to the farmers, aphids are generally not seen during the monsoon, and if an indigenous variety of cotton is grown as a rain-fed crop, it is noticed that aphid infestation does not occur. Aphids appear on four-month-old cotton crop, normally appending themselves to the undersides of the leaves to suck the sap. A black, sticky substance is found on the aphid-infested leaves in a condition known as galo (sweet). If unattended, the condition perists till the end of the cotton season. Generally, yellow and green aphids are seen in cotton. Dholakia devised a simple treatment to control the aphid in cotton, whereby a mixture of 100 to 200 millilitres of juice of lemons is mixed with 15 lit of water and sprayed over the crop. The treatment is repeated at weekly intervals. Last year, spraying about 18 to 20 pumps (of 15 lit capacity) per hectare of cotton crop, just thrice, Dholakia succeeded in controlling the pest.
