Ramabhai B Patel describes an effective pest contol remedy using imli (tamarind seeds) when crabs damage the kharif paddy crop by cutting the stems of the plant. Imli is also used in curbing the menace of the bund breakages due to the burrowing of the crabs. After 30 to 35 days of transplanting, the kharif paddy crop is prone to attacks by crabs. Farmers in Valsad district of Gujarat face a serious threat to their kharif paddy crops and suffer bund breakages in the field due to the menace of the crabs. The crabs damage the kharif crop by cutting the stems of the plant, and also by breaking the field bunds by burrowing, due to which water leaks out of the fields through the holes created by the crabs. Ramabhai Patel described a method in which farmers used tamarind seeds to control the dual menace. In this procedure, 5 to 6 tamarind seeds are soaked in water for 24 hours and then placed around the holes in which the crabs make their nests. According to the farmers, when the crabs try to eat the seeds, they become firmly lodged in the mouth. This causes the crabs' death within a day or two. According to Ramabhai, the practice has been in use for the past 30 years. Farmers also broadcast the imli Tamarindindus indica seeds, on the bunds and hedges of the field, which prevents damages to the bunds and, hence, leakage of water from the fields.Approximately 800 grams to one kilogram tamarind seeds are required per hectare of paddy. Imli (tamarind seeds) are soaked in water for 24 hours, then fed to the crabs. Five to six seeds are placed around the holes in which the crabs make their nests. When the crabs try to eat the seeds, they become firmly lodged in the mouth, causing the pest's death within a day or two. Farmers also broadcast the imli on the bunds and hedges of the field, which prevents damages to the bunds and, hence, leakage of water from the fields. Approximately 800 grams to one kilogram tamarind seeds are needed per hectare of paddy.Caution This is a simple, natural and inexpensive remedy using an inexpensive and easily available material, imli (Tamarindus indica), to curb the dual menace of crabs, which damage the kharif paddy crop by cutting the stems of the plant, and also break field bunds by burrowing, due to which water leaks out of the fields through the holes thus created by the crabs
