Shri Bharamegowda describes a farming technique which helps in controlling fruit and shoot borers of brinjal crops. Brinjal, considered a delicacy in the northern part of Karnataka, is made into a brinjal curry (Oodee Kayee Palya)and eaten with great relish with bajra Pearl millet)rotis (bread). But, as Shri Bharamegowda tells us, raising brinjal is no easy task as it is prone to shoot and fruit borer attacks. The borers (Lucinodes orbonalis usually enter the fruits as caterpillars and pupate inside. According to Shri Bharamegowda, intercropping the brinjal with sabbasige checks the borers, due to the strong, pungent odour of the sabbasige, which acts as a repellant against the pest. As the sabbasige has a strong, pungent odour, it acts as a repellant against the fruit and shoot borer pest Lucinodes orbonalis G) when the sabbasige is intercropped with the brinjal.CautionAs the sabbasige has a strong, pungent odour, it acts as a repellant against the fruit andshoot borer pest Lucinodes orbonalis G) when the sabbasige is intercropped with the brinjal
