Beema Reddy, a farmer from Navalgund taluka, Dharwad district, of Karnataka, learnt a method,from his father, of controlling grain smut in sorghum. Grain smut is a perennial problem in the sorghum-dominated northern Karnataka.Just before sowing, Beema takes the sorghum seeds and soaks them in cow urine for two to three minutes, and immediately dries them under the sun. As soon as the seeds are dried in the sun,he sows them. According to Beema, this is a sure method of control of the sorghum pest.
