Castor oil to control the bursting of bananas and to improve the size, weight and lustre of the fruit. VajubhaiDhanjibhaiBhat of the Bhavnagar district in Gujarat uses castor oil to control the bursting of bananas at harvest time. About two to three weeks before harvesting, Bhat fills a tin with castor oil and keeps it over the water channel in such a fashion that drops of oil fall into running water supplied to the banana trees. The treatment is supposed to control the bursting of bananas due to excessive heat at harvest time. Besides, the practice is also believed to improve the size, weight and lustre of the fruit. The practice has been in use only for the last seven or eight years in this region. Some farmers apply castor cake to the crop three to four months before harvesting to achieve similar effects.
