When decay begins in bottle gourd crop, asafoetida is used. As decay sets in, an abscess develops in the fruit. The decay is preceded by formation of a black spot on each fruit, and results in lesser yield. To treat the condition, Mohanbhai Patel digs a one-foot-deep pit near the root of each plant. In the pit, one teaspoonful of asafoetida is put and covered with soil. This helps gain 75 per cent control over the decay.
