Farmers in and around Mangalore (on the border of Karnataka and Kerala) use specialy treated coconuts to protect vegetable seeds from mice and other pests . Farmers in and around Mangalore, which is on the border of Karnataka and Kerala, soak fully grown coconuts with unripe kernels in water for two months and dry them thoroughly in sunlight. They insert a rod through the eyes of the coconuts and clear them. They put vegetable seeds in through the hole, seal it with pith of coconut and cover it with lime. These coconuts are stored on the shelf inside a kitchen to protect them from mice and other pests. The seeds can be stored up to two to three years. The coconut shells can be used for several years, sometimes over generations. Soak fully grown coconuts with unripe kernels in water for two months and dry them thoroughly in sunlight.
