Cultivation of sunflower with wheat to control rats. Tribal farmers of Nani Devroopan Village in the Bharuch district of Gujarat observe that when sunflower is cultivated with wheat, it has a controlling effect on rats, particularly at grain development and maturity stage. Birds like owls sit on strong and sturdy sunflower plants and wait for rats in the fields. They eat rats during the night and do not destroy or consume the seeds of the sunflower. Rats percieve bulky sunflowers as owls sitting on the the plants. The rat movement is reduced and damage to the maturing wheat crop is minimised. This might be more effective during the moonlit nights. Cultivate sunflower with wheat.
