About the Practice
Detail:

Dried mango leaves used as fuel in remote areas when it is difficult to collect fuel wood. Villagers of Pirgunj in the Malda district of West Bengal preserve mango leaves to be used as fuel at times when other conventional sources are exhausted. The Malda district is known to be a mango belt. But other trees that are conventional sources of fuel wood are limited in number. People in remote areas of the district find it difficult to collect fuel wood. They have thus come up with a solution to preserve mango leaves, to be used as fuel at times when other conventional sources are exhausted. They collect mango leaves and spread them in open courtyards for sun drying for two or three days. The dried leaves are heaped in an elevated area of the courtyard and bamboo sticks are stacked around the heap to protect it from wind and rain. Five or six layers of wheat straw are kept on the top of the heap to avoid rainwater getting into it. This process keeps the moisture content static for up to three months and takes care of fuel requirement during the monsoon season.Collect mango leaves and spread them in open courtyards for sun drying for two or three days.Heap the dried leaves in an elevated area of the courtyard and stack bamboo sticks around the heap to protect it from wind and rain.
