The waste generated from the growing number of units manufacturing PPE gowns poses a problem for disposal owing to its plastic content. It is in this context, that an idea of converting this waste into mattresses came into the innovative mind of Kochi based entrepreneur, Lakshmi Menon. She engaged local women, who had run out of jobs during the lockdown; to braid the waste material uniformly and tie them up into rolls to form a mattress called 'Shayya'.
