About the Practice
Problem Statement:

Cattle health, indicated by body temperature and heart rate, is difficult to monitor for the layman farmer, though it is central to his operation. Body temperature measurement is currently done through a painful rectal thermometer insertion, and demands up to three people to perform. Heart rate measurements, on the other hand, warrant a doctor’s expertise because the average farmer in India does not feel equipped to take the measurement. Without knowing these metrics, a farmer cannot judge whether one of his many cattle is ill until the doctor gives a diagnosis. It often takes doctors one hour or two hours to arrive to the farm and diagnose the cow. In that time, a cow often dies

Detail:

We have developed the animal health monitoring device, a user-friendly biometric screening machine, to enable easy cattle body temperature measurements. Our device simplifies biometric readings by utilizing a non-invasive. Cattle biometrics can be sent to Android devices via Bluetooth on App, and green and red LEDs on the device indicate whether metrics fall within normal boundaries. The device’s simple controls and readouts afford such an ease of use so as to be useful for uneducated farmers. On the other hand, the application of simple sensors and microprocessors keeps device costs and power usage low, making it accessible to farmers of all economic statuses. Initial field tests indicated the device’s utility in cattle health monitoring, and farmers stated that it would be useful for preventing livestock mortality. This device decentralizes and democratizes cattle health monitoring to make it accessible to all, not just veterinarians. Such monitoring can help farmers summon doctors in a timely manner. Further, knowing animal biometrics can help farmers to administer short-term, first-line remedies to maintain animal health until a doctor’s treatment can be obtained.
