About the Practice
Problem Statement:

The common practice of removing the shell of biba fruit is by hammering, but this causes infection in the hands of workers due to biba oil.

Detail:

Biba/Bhilava (Semecarpus anacardium) plant has medicinal properties, which are extremely beneficial in diseases like piles, colitis, diarrhea, dyspepsia, ascites, tumors and worms. The common practice of removing the shell of biba fruit is by hammering, but this causes infection in the hands of workers due to biba oil. Subhash has made manual and automatic machines for processing of the biba fruit. In the manual machine, the fruit is kept in a container covered with transparent fibre glass. The force is applied through a hammer. One can process 150 fruits in an hour using this machine. The automatic version uses a chain based conveying mechanism to lift and put the fruit at the cutting section where it is cut by rotating blades. This machine running on a single phase motor can shell about 400 biba fruits in an hour. http://nif.org.in/innovation/biba-fruit-shelling-machine/764
