"The problem starts with our common perception that Flowers are Bio-Degradable and do not require organised waste disposal methods. However Floral Waste is a major pollutant and a health hazard when left unattended. For such reasons as the above Floral Waste is never considered a Pollutant / hazard in the Waste Management world. General practice hs been to throw away used/unused/Unsold/discarded flowers into the landfills. Segregation is not a practice in India for Floral Waste. The flowers used in worship is often thrown away in water bodies which directly pollutes it. How do flowers pollute? Studies have shown that flowers when decomposing emit gases and also traces of chemicals (pesticides & fertilisers) that has been used in its farming. This contaminates the earth and water alike which finds its way to our bodies. Floral Waste Management has become very important for the economy and the environment alike. "

Problem Scale: Consider these facts - Hyderabad a city in the Telangana with apopulation touching 10 Million gets about 1000 Metric Tonnes of flowers into its main market EVERY DAY; Flowers of any type are rendered waste after use - in a day, couple of days or may be in a couple of hours; Surat, another city in the west of India in Gujarat generates approx. 1.5 Meric Tons of floral waste Per Day. Let us look at a global scenario - Every Valentines Day Americans purchase 250 Million Roses of which approx 90% are imported from far flunged countries like Ethiopia or Colombia. Apart from the waste that the bio-mass of the flowers generate, consider the carbon footprints left behind by this consumption. That Flowers are consumed (and subsequently wasted) globally is corroborated by the fact that flower industry is over a couple of 100 Billion Dollars worth. If we think or presume that India consumes a lot of flowers, a look at the statistics of the flower consumption of the world will leave us baffled - Higher Consumption of flowers has been directly proportional to the growth in income.Europe leads in consumption of flowers followed by US.
