Low Cost Transport for Remote area
The state of Assam has 30% forest cover which consists mainly of bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus; Bambusa spp.). The common species found are Jati Bha, Bholuka Bah and Kahko nah . However, the bamboo plantations are fast depleting, leading to a rapid increase in its price. The natives of Assam consider the bamboo sacred. The people utilize nearly every part of the plant for various needs. It is common for households to grow a patch of bamboo which they use for the purpose of making mats, furniture, roofs, providing fodder for cattle, also the shoots of bamboo are eaten as a dish and as pickle. Bamboo is also used in making other items of home decorations which bring good returns to the artisans. The seeds of the innovation were laid when Mr. Pathak wanted to buy a cycle for himself but found that he could not afford any of the cycles available on the market. Therefore he thought of constructing one with a locally available raw material i.e. bamboo. He researched and carefully planned the design of the various parts that would go into the making of the cycle. After many days of hardwork he successfully designed and constructed a bicycle from bamboo.
