environment friendly silencer for engines
Mr. M. Akasi (42) studied up to 6th standard. He has been running a tyre vulcanising centre in Reserve line, Sivakasi West, Virudhunagar District for the past 2.5 years. As a child labourer, he has worked in building construction, then became a mason and worked for 4 years. Afterwards he worked in offset pininting at Sivakasi for 3 years. He learnt driving and served as a driver of a tourist van for 9 years and then as a lorry driver from 1990 onwards transporting matches to other states. During 1997, when he took a load to Assam along with another driver working in shift, he met with an accident and fractured both legs. When he started the tyre vulcanising centre, he owned a high speed oil engine compressor which was a cause for both sound and smoke pollution to the nearby residents. The people complained to the local MLA, and demanded to shift his centre to some other place like the Industrial estate. This has necessitated him to invent a silencer with minimum sound pollution and with least smoke. The high speed oil engine wth the diesel consumption of 1.5 litres per hour was emitting lot of black smoke and making loud noise. Description of Innovation: He first converted this high speed engine into a low speed engine. Still no significant reduction in the sound or smoke emissions. In the next step, he changed the silencer tube size from 1 inch to 1.5 inches diameter. This change has also no effect on sound and smoke. Then he decided to change the muffler diameter size from 10 inches to a larger size of 20 inches. When he cut open the old muffler of 20 inches he found only one thread inside in it. (He subsequently made by cutting three tin sheets to a diameter of 20 inches and fitted them into one by welding carefully with a gap of 2 mm. between each tin sheet. He also made 22 holes similar to those found in the old 20 inches diameter muffler). This modified muffler assembled by him by his constant effort was fitted with a silencer tube of 20 inches diameter. To his surprise, he observed that he could succeed at last with less sound and smoke emitted from the oil engine. Further the smoke emitted was white instead of black indicating reduced presence of carbonmonooxide and carbondioxide. The smoke was free from offensive odour. There was no subsequent complaint by the public. Advantages: 1. Sound produced by the oil engine was much less 2. The smoke emited was less in quantity and the colour of smoke was white instead of black. 3. There was no health hazards to the people who live nearby. Therefore now his centre is environmentally sound and safe. 4. The cost of the silencer is Rs. 900.
