Problem Statement:

To sow paddy directly


The problems identified were: All farmers are raising paddy crops more or less same time during the season. So there is heavy labour shortage during that period. Yield from transplanted crop is comparatively lesser than direct sowing method. Tillering is more in direct sowing paddy crop; attain maturity well in advance i.e., before 10 days in the direct sowing method.Cost of cultivation is high in transplanting of paddy.With this idea he contacted Mr.M. Gopal who is running a lathe workshop at Mayiladuthurai. With his request Mr. Gopal has designed a new direct sown paddy seed drill. But the dropping of seeds is not in uniform in lines as expected. For that Mr. Gopal provided a screw conveyor belt in the PVC pipe. Fanally he designed the improved version of seeddrill. Description of the Direct sowing Paddy seed drill This equipment consists of 51/4 long and 1/2 width PVC pipe which is connected with 1 3/4 long dia iron wheels at their end. In the middle of the pipe there is one hopper for seed filling. In this PVC pipe 1 cm dia holes were made in circular manner in 10 rows at a interval of 20 cm. In the inner side of the pipe there is a conveyor belt extends to both side from the middle. And there is a long T shaped handle for pulling the equipment. While pulling this equipment, the seeds get conveyed from the hopper to holes in the pipe. The seeds were fall through holes at an internal of 10 cm. Advantages of Direct Sowing Method: This direct sowing method is economical one. ie Rs. 3000/- per acre can be saved. Seed rate is reduced to 40 kg/acre where in for transplanting method it is 60 kg/ acre. Damage due to natural Calameties when the seed bed preparation is reduced. 100% germination. Tillering capacity increased. Yield increased. Un productive tilling usually not at all noticed. Advatages of Improved seed drill Presence of screw conveyor in the seeddrill. Adding seed in single hopper is sufficient No Thinning of seedling is needed. Two labourers are sufficient The instrument costs about Rs .4,500/-
