The betel nut cutter looks a lot like a metal Charkha(wheel). It is about 6 inches (15cm.s) wide and 6 inches high and is operated by an 0.5 hp. motor. It has a metal hopper at the top where 400-500 gm. of raw betel nuts are placed; these funnel down to a blade by rotating a handle. The betel nuts are cut to the size required by the customers i.e. mainly the paanwalas. One kilogram of supari takes a minute to cut. Only one person is required to run it. In comparison, if this operation is done manually, one person needs an hour to cut one kilogram; and a day to cut 10 kg with daily labour costs per person at Rs.50. The machines are capable of cutting 500 kg in eight hours. 1. It takes one minute to cut a kilogram of betel nuts while it takes one person an hour to chop a kilogram. 2. It requires only one person to operate.
