About the Practice
Problem Statement:

The basic idea behind the project is to utilize the waste material (eggshell and coconut), that are produced in huge amount. these waste although biodegradable, but the damping of huge stock causes so many especially in a country like India where there is a scarcity of land and moreover damping these could favour the growth of the pathogen. which could lead to a number of diseases. the basic idea behind these project is to use waste material; coconut shell and eggshells in a beneficial manner so that it could reduce the environmental risk. this project focuses on a novel idea of utilizing both the material at the same time synthesize the ordered porous carbon. furthermore to fabricate the membrane from synthesized porous carbon for water and air filtration application. finally, the objective is to produce a cheap water and air filtration media that every household can use

Detail:

Background and motivation: The annual production of eggs in India was about 82.929 billion units in years 2015-2016 if we see the statistics each year eggs production growing. Eggshells almost contain 11% of the total egg weight. If we calculate eggshells waste for the year 2015-2016, it would be 547331.4 tons per year. Statistics show huge eggs production worldwide. Although the eggshells are the biodegradable but huge production of egg on the daily basis requires the large area for dumping and one of major pollution risk due such huge eggshells stock is a potential source of pathogens growth. However, they could be of economic value when used in a useful manner. Also, environmental issues should be considered in order to add value to eggshell instead of dumping them into the atmosphere. Moreover, use of eggshells as an alternative source of calcium carbonate may reduce the burden on the natural reserves of limestone, a nonrenewable natural source. Another waste material with huge daily stock is coconut which could be of potential use. The coconut shell is waste material. It is outer structure protecting fruit and water inside the coconut. India is the third highest coconut producing country with an annual production of 11,930,000 tons. The shells can be used for fuel and are a source of charcoal. Activated carbon manufactured from coconut shell is considered extremely effective for the removal of impurities. Our project: Synthesis of hierarchical activated carbon, using waste coconut shell and eggshell. In present investigation eggshell and coconut (both waste) are used as an activating agent and precursor material for synthesis of ordered activated carbon. The waste eggshell mixed with coconut shell carbonized to produce activated carbon .here eggshell act as hard template as well as an activating agent while coconut shell is a precursor. This process produces very fine Nanoporous carbon. Further synthesized ordered porous carbon can be utilized in a number of ways.
