About the Practice
Problem Statement:

1) Fulfill the energy demand and reduce the import of fossil fuels. 2) Finding out the alternative fuel for diesel engine without modifying the engine. 3) Reducing the Emissions like NOx, HC etc. which is higher when using diesel or biodiesel. 4)use the biofuel blend without major impact on performance parameter compared with diesel fuel.

Detail:

An effort has been taken to study performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fueled with biodiesel blend fuel using EGR values 5%, 10%, 15% at various compression ratio. All the experiments were conducted on a single-cylinder, four-stroke, water cooled, direct injection diesel engine at the engine full load operation and constant engine speed of 1200 rpm. The results obtained with biodiesel blend (rapeseed oil methyl ester blended with butanol) were compared with the diesel fuel and biodiesel as reference fuel. The engine performance and efficiency obtained in biodiesel case were less, which could be attributed to lower calorific value of biodiesel. CO and UHC emissions for biodiesel were lower than that of diesel fuel. However, it was observed that NOx emissions for biodiesel were higher than that of diesel fuel. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a very effective technique to reduce NOx emissions from a diesel engine. When similar percentages (%by volume) of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) were used in the cases of rapeseed oil methyl ester blended with butanol, NOx emissions were considerably reduced to lower values.
